Maybe $10,000 each is the reason? 
I think that's the cost of our security gates (we're adding one to the children's department when we renovate).
 
We are now keeping new DVDs behind the circ desk, since they seemed to be the prime targets of our thieves (who would sometimes peel off the security strips, apparently with a utility knife, and stash them in remote corners of the stacks). We have them in thin CD cases, in barcode order. DVD cases are on display for browsing.
 
I think the system is working pretty well, although of course it's a pain in the neck for the circ staff.

Though I've not worked in libraries that do this, why don't library have security gates at bathrooms, just as bookstores do?
