If they are not planning to chekc items out, I would think you could track
that many items in either an Excel spreadsheet or Access database.

Subject: [Publib] Software for small personal library

A friend would like to organize and catalog a small, private, personal
collection (possibly between 1,000 and 1,500 books). Does anyone know of (or
better yet recommends) a reasonably-priced basic software cataloging system?

  Thank you for your ideas,
