[Publib] cd-rom servers

I have 2 cd-rom game computers in the children's room using a product called
"Virtual Drive" from FarStone Technologies which burns the cd-rom games onto
the hard drive. It is inexpensive ($39) a copy and works great. I have 25
cd-rom games burned on each computer.

How many CDs do you have and how much money are you
willing to spend? I was thinking about a CD rom server
for our children's CDs and discovered they were fairly
expensive. Instead, I used the CD rom drives on staff
computers to run the games. On the children's
computers, I mapped a network drive to the staff
computer that had the game I was installing. Then I
installed the game remotely, so that when a child
clicks on the icon, the computer in the children's
dapartment knows to look for the cd-rom in the (for
example) 'g' drive, which is actually another
computer. If you don't have more games than you have
staff computers and if your staff doesn't really use
their CD drives, it's a much cheaper alternative to a
cd server.

Would love some input regarding CD-ROM servers
(brands, experience,
recommendations). We are in the process of building a
new library and
would like to network the children's game CDs. Any
information would be
greatly appreciated.

I believe my basic request was that people not put "Please reply off list"
in their messages. I did not request that people ALWAYS reply to the list.
There are obviously times when it is better to post off list.

However, for the most part, responding to the list is helpful to all of us.
This is, after all, a discussion list not a questions only list.

Hi,

Judy mentioned two good reasons for offlist replies -- length and
repitition. Two more: the list doesn't accept attachments and anything sent
to the list is very public -- and archived to boot, so it's eternally
public. It's possible to make comments on offlist replies that may be
helpful but that the writer might prefer not be posted to the entire world.
Here in D.C. we're always very tuned into all political repercussins.

(Of course, if you request not to be quoted on something you're relying on
the goodwill of your recipient, so you still won't want to reveal any deep
secrets, but you might feel able to offer somewhat more candid
observations.)
