[Publib] ILL questions

We are part of a 20-library consortium in PA. We have a limit of 5 ILL holds
in the works and 10 regular (intralibrary) holds. The 10 intralibrary holds
limit comes from the online card catalog, set up by the consortium
headquarters. There holds are placed in the computer, filled with the first
available item from the consortium members, and shipped via a van delivery
system throughout the county.

The 5 ILL limit is ours, and is there basically because not only am I the
director (and the circulation coordinator, programming director, maintenance
department and office supply "orderer") but I also am the ILL department.
:o) We have 2 sources for ILLS - first we search through AccessPA (a
wonderful system!) and place requests online directly to other PA libraries.
Secondly, our district center in Reading has an OCLC membership and will
request hard to find, unique items for us, if asked. They are great to work
with and can find most anything.

As for the other questions -
And no- we do not charge for any ILL's or intralibrary loans unless the
lending library has fees. We have requested that they alert us to the fees
first so we can make sure the patron knows what they are an is willing to
pay them.

We will request anything - as long as we can find available copies and it is
not new (published within the last year) .

We will renew items if the patron requests the renewal in a timely manner
(we required 3 businesses days before the original due date).

Hope that does not muddy the waters too much -

For Tracy and anyone else who has "in the works" limits: are you in a
consortium? Does the ILL limit pertain to borrowing from within the
consortium as well as from without?

We are part of a 24-library consortium. If a patron places a hold on an item
s/he gets the first available copy, from whatever library has it, whether or
not the home library owns the it. If the item comes from another library it
counts as an ILL; if that first available copy is the home library, it
obviously is not an ILL. But we can't control (at least not easily) what
library will send it, figuring that patrons care more about getting what
they want quickly than from where it comes.

2. Do you have a limit on the number of requests you allow at any given time
or over a period of time? If yes, please give limits.

*** We limit to 2 items in the works at any one time***
