[Publib] Librarian Salaries: Unionized Newspaper Work

Salary data doesn't always tell the whole story. How can a
Librarian earning $42,000 be better off than one earning
$50,000 per year? Consider that if the higher paid librarian
must contribute a percentage towards the health insurance
premium, it will reduce the all important (in my opinion)
take home pay of the employee. Consider that the lower
paid librarian might have all travel expenses paid and
memberships paid for participation in professional organizations
while the librarian with a higher declared salary may not.
Consider that the lower paid librarian might have better
vacation and sick leave benefits and pension plans than the
librarian with higher declared income. Consider that
$50,000 per year in Boston or Washington, D.C. may be
impossible to live on while $40,000 per year in rural
Tennessee or Iowa might allow for considerable disposable
income (take home pay) after bills, mortage, etc. are paid
at the end of the month.
Declared gross salary is much less important than the final
result of disposable income at the end of the month. When it
comes to exposure to taxes, one is sometimes better off
with a lower declared income and to have one's employer
handling other expenses such as fully paid health insurance
premiums and generous sick leave benefits.
