I was recently trolling for similar stuff, and would be very interested in responses to Cheri's inquiry.

Subject: [Publib] best kids areas
We are going to incorporate a lot of fun, neat, cool and perhaps over-the-top ideas into our new children's and young adult areas. I would like to hear from libraries that have done the same... do's, don'ts, raves and woops. We want to use color, texture, space and create areas with flair. If you have a virtual tour, I'd love to see it! As well as any advice from those who have experience in this. Thanks, Cheri
