Space and connectivity are both reasons to consider laptops. We offer
wireless access, and many people bring their laptops to the library. When
our branch opened in 2000, we had only 2 Internet stations. We now have 14
stations, not counting 6 that are 15-minute access. We have no space to add
computer stations, so having laptops that could be used anywhere in the
building would be great. Laptops would also allow parents to remain with
their children in the children's department while they access the Internet
via wi-fi. Just a couple of possibilities.

So.. why have laptops at all, when desktops are so much cheaper? Simply add
more desktops, and peripherals such as external hard drives/usb flashdrives
can be connected just as easily to a desktop. Configuration for security,
internet access, etc. would be just as easy, and internal components for
upgrading periodically, are much more easily replaced in a desktop.
