Law and Order boasts that it is "ripped from the headlines"; there was
one episode where a rap star and his singer girlfriend are in a
nightclub where shots are fired ala Puff Daddy and JLo, another where
a pop singer is accused of child molestation ala Michael Jackson.

As long as names aren't being used, I don't see a problem with this.
In my opinion, everything could be "based" on reality.  A woman is
raped while out for a jog, a child is snatched in a mall parking lot,
a man is mugged and murdered on his walk home from the subway...
These are all things that have happened and will probably continue to
happen.  And they'll probably continue to be fodder for novels.

Just my 2 cents...
