The New York Times reports that the City of New York has come to terms with
its largest union, District Council 37, which also contains New York Public
Library’s Library Guild, Local 1930. The tentative contract will run for 32
months, gives members ten percent raises and ends the requirement that they
live in the city, a rule that had hampered efforts to hire library workers.
I have no details on the settlement terms for library workers; according to
the Times,
“The agreement, which would be retroactive to July 1, 2005, calls for a
raise of 3.15 percent for the first year. It provides for a 2 percent raise this
Aug. 1 for six months and then a 4 percent increase on Feb. 1. The agreement
would expire on March 2, 2008. With these raises and other supplements,
union officials said the deal provided a total pay increase of 10 percent. Since
1987, the city has required that workers in District Council 37 live in the
city, a rule that has drawn increasing complaints in light of the city’s
fast-rising housing costs. Under the deal, the union’s 120,000 members will also
be allowed to live in Nassau, Suffolk, Westchester, Rockland, Orange and
Putnam Counties. They will still pay the city income tax, under the
agreement. The union’s leaders had also pushed for the right for its members to live
in New Jersey as well, but that bid apparently failed, the union leaders
said.”
Any information concerning Local 1930 would be appreciated.
