Count me in as agreeing with Ray. Parents have to be in the room if you
have a lap sit or toddler storytime. At a library where I previously worked
the storyteller was so great that the parents enjoyed the stories as much if
not more than the children. There were murmurings of pitchforks and torches
when someone suggested parents be excluded from Mary Anne's tales.

However, the best reason to allow and even encourage parents to participate
came from a single mother with little family support. She said she came to
storytime because it was helping her learn to be a better mother. She was
learning stories, games, songs and learning activities she could use with
her boy the 167 hours a week when there was no library storytime. She has
her counterparts in your community, guaranteed.
