[Publib] Stumper: book - talking black stallion, sword more powerful with each kill

  I have a patron looking for a book - here are the known details:
   
  --a talking black stallion
  --a sorcerer who switched from good to evil every time he died
  --a sword that became more powerful with each kill
  --an evil wizard (apparently the kid's uncle, who makes a sword in book 3)
  --the kid learns magic when possessed for a short time by his dead father
