Please pardon the cross-posting.

I am currently seeking personal essays on public libraries that are either currently using a collection agency to collect delinquent fines, or have used a collection agency in the past, for the November/December issue of Public Libraries magazine. Essays appear in the Perspectives column.

Has the use of a collection agency increased the amount of overdue fines you are able to collect? Are you able to keep fines, or has your city/town pressed for using an agency? Have you used a collection agency in the past, only to discover that the results were not worth the investment? What are your thoughts on the ethics of using outside agencies to recoup fines?

The Perspectives column is designed to present viewpoints on topics of current issues to public libraries. Essays run from 700 - 1,000 words in leg nth and should address your personal thoughts on the given topic. Contributors do not receive pay. Those whose articles are chosen to appear in the column, receive two free copies of the issue in which their essay appears.

The deadline for inclusion in this column is July 17, 2006. Please forward your essay to me via email at nhill at mvlc.org and/or bookwoman3966 at yahoo.com. You may also send any questions you may have to either of these addresses. If you do not wish to submit an essay but know of another library that uses a collection agency, please forward this message on to the appropriate staff member.

I'm looking forward to learning all about your experiences!

  Sincerely,
  Nanci Milone Hill
