I am trying to find out if any libraries have ever
tried to set up a combination bookmobile and branch
operation. Our library is looking into expanding
services out into the rest of our county. Because of
tight budgets, it seems to be impractible to purchase
a full-size bookmobile but one of our board members
suggested that we look into other delivery mechanisms.
It should be possible for some of the smaller towns in
our county to provide a building or room to house
books. If the library purchased a small bookmobile
that could hold about 2500 books, we could house the
same number in the small town facility. This facility
would be open one day a week when the bookmobile came
to town. We could then use the bookmobile staff to
circulate books from both the building and the
bookmobile. I have not heard of such an operation and
would like to find out if other libraries have
considered doing this. Please reply to the list if you
have had experience with this type of operation.
