The Dummies series is good, although we had a patron get "insulted" when we
handed her two books on computers, one of which was a Dummies title. Some
days you just can't win....

At My Former Place of Work, I purchased extra copies
of Dummies books about computers, Internet, MS Office,
email, etc. They were kept as reference in the
computer room.

If patrons needed more help than I had time to give, I
would get them started and give them the book to
follow. Not everyone liked it, but some ended up very
happy -- the Dummies gave a clearer explanation than I
could have done! I think gave some patrons a feeling
of independence, "Hey, I can figure out this computer
stuff without someone holding my hand!"

It's not going to work for everyone, but it can help.
