[Publib] RE: permission to report/forward postings

I've been on various listservs for a number of years. If I google my
name (c'mon admit it, you've all done it!) I can still see old posts of
mine from those listservs I've been on that are archived online.
Including this one. Always good to be aware that we are speaking to a
very large public audience.

That said, I think common courtesy does require that we talk to each
other about forwarding things when it's a matter of giving credit where
credit is due. If someone has put in the work to compile information on
a given topic for example, and you want to snag that and use it in say,
a local publication, then for heaven's sake contact the person who did
the work and ask permission. Add a little line ascribing credit. Yes,
the information could be accessed publicly. It's just nice to ask and
give people credit for their work. Obviously, it would also be nice to
ask before forwarding something that could be potentially embarrassing.

Forwarding posts to staff members that you think would be useful for
them in their work, is IMO, not at all the same thing. We all subscribe
to listservs for this very reason, don't we? That is, so that we can
glean information that will help us and our staff to do our jobs and to
stay current with information we need to stay current in our profession.
I know I wouldn't mind anyone doing that with anything I post... should
I ever post something forward-worthy. ;-)
