It has been more than a century, 120 years to be
exact, since Andrew Carnegie made his first library
grant in the United States. The program ran for 31
years, from 1886 to 1917 when the last of the library
grants was given and construction completed. Carnegie
died in 1919, but the Carnegie Corp. of New York still
supports libraries across the country.

Carnegie’s library buildings still stand in small
towns across the United States. There are hundreds of
them—squat little buildings that look so much alike
they are referred to as “Carnegie Classic.” Built in
the late 19th century and early 20th century, they all
trace their origin to a money grant from Carnegie.
