Dear list moderator,
My apologies for e-mailing the list directly, but my attempts to unsubscribe via the web and also sending e-mail to remove me have failed. Could the moderator of this list please unsubscribe me?
Thank you in advance,
Susan

The internal speaker is fairly simple to disconnect, and I highly recommend
doing it on the public computers.

There is also the question of context. We say things to one audience that we may not say to another.
I know that on another listserv I belong to, it was decided that nothing from the list should be re-published or forwarded outside the list without the permission of the original poster. One of the examples in support of this policy given was a harsh "review" of a recent book that a list member posted. That post was then forwarded by another list member to the author of the book. While the original poster would undoubtedly stand by his opinion of the work, he probably would express that opinion differently if he were addressing the author of the work.
Also, as other posters have pointed out, we are less careful with our editing and fact-checking when firing off an e-mail in between patrons than we would be when writing for publication.
Just my two cents...

Even though there is nothing in the guidelines it is proper netiquette to write to each individual to ask them for permission to publish a specific message.
Like your daughter, we may not want our every error published in another forum. Just because this is a "public" space does not mean that the world reads our every message, and some thing I write today may not reflect my stance tomorrow (or two years from now). Possibly in the spur of the moment I miss-typed or dropped a word, leaving an erroneous perception. When asked about publishing the message elsewhere I would appreciate the chance to correct any errors in the original.
I've never denied a requester permission, but I have always appreciated the opportunity to fact check my statements one more time. <g>

I already sent my permission directly to the student who asked the question, but I am wondering if there is a policy or preference about this? I actually visited the publib site first (and I never think to do this), but did not see anything that pertained to reproducing our posts. I did say in my permission email that I thought publib should be appropriately acknowledged as the source of whatever he uses. I mainly think this is the Internet so.... but I do recall that one of my daughters was horrified that her mother and I read her blog from time to time. She had no problem with the rest of the world reading it, just her parents. Now she has a Live.Journal and "some" things are only available to those on her friends list. Her parents are welcome to read her journal -- but we are not included among her several gazillion friends. So publibers, do we care if our collected wisdom and collective silliness are reported far and wide?

How about the d_skin protector for discs?

I am also curious about what people use to repair cds. I know one library that sends them out at a cost of $2.50, which seems like too much money. What do libraries use when a patron returns a cd with complaints of poor quality, besides just cleaning it?

Unfortunately, it's unrealistic to expect that email WON'T get forwarded,
particularly list email-but I'm even careful about personal email. I submit
that the primary function of library conferences is to say face to face in a
clean room what you have been waiting to unload on distant colleagues for
six months. The good ol' telephone can be a decent stand-in, if you trust
that you're not on speakerphone.
I learned this in library school, oh yes, young'uns, back in 1991, when we
had to build our modems from twigs and thatching and we had horse-powered
computers. We had a student bulletin board (electronic, not cork) where we
shared our opinions among ourselves in a discussion supposedly Just For
Students. Darned if some little brown-nosing dweeb didn't show some of the
traffic to a couple of faculty members.
Rules are nice, but if you put it in movable bytes, do not be surprised
where it goes next. Period.
