The California Bar Association went through this dilemma a number of years
ago. The main complaint was dues money (we're talking part of $400 a year) going
to pay for political causes unrelated to the practice of law.
I believe a lawsuit resulted. (Big surprise.) You now have the option of
deducting money for lobbying in the political arena from your dues.

Go here and see how all that went:
http://www.abanet.org/barserv/calduesx.html By most estimates 80 percent of the association's expenses went toward
disciplining attorneys. A conservative governor, Pete Wilson, did not enjoy
the political stances which the association indulged in, among them support for
affirmative action and same-sex marriage. So he cut off their heads. No more
investigations of attorneys that had defrauded the public. The lawyers were
relieved of having to pay $458 dues-- we know how tough that would be for them
to find that sort of money.
