Wow! We've had cars broken into and valuables stolen and haven't been asked for anything like that. You have a really dedicated police force to go to all that trouble for a keying!

We had a similar situation occur last year, but not with computers. The
police wanted to know who checked out materials doing a specific time
period, perhaps an hour or so. We insisted upon a court order. It was
approved and we did provide a list of names of people that were associated
with the library cards used during that time period. The police were
happy. We were abiding by the court order.
In our case, a car on the parking lot had been keyed and the police had a
short list of suspects. The use of a specific library card helped them
determine whether the person had been on the premises at approximately the
same time.
In your situation, I believe you will need the court order.
