[Publib] Birth of a child short story

A patron is looking for the title of a short story written about the birth of a child.  The author leads you to believe that a stranger has come to live with a family and steals the man's wife's affections, jewelry etc.  It is not until the very end that the author reveals that the stranger is his new son.  He concludes with the words similar to "...it is you who has spoiled the child."  She thinks that the author is Nathaniel Hawthorne, however is not sure.
