My two favorite guides are "VideoHound Golden Movie Retriever" (Thomson
Gale- updated annually) and IMDb.com.
"VideoHound" contains great indexes to films and their own rating
systems of dog bones ;-) . The indexes cover categories, awards, casts,
directors, writers, cinematographers, composers and something called
"kibbles and series index". The "kibbles" index covers adaptations,
recurring characters, successful screen partnerships and top box office
films.
IMDb.com has a useful awards index and links to an impressive array of
reviews. There is also a "top 250 films" voted on by regular IMDb
voters. Each title is linked into a info on cast, crew, reviews, etc.
as are all titles listed. IMDb is useful when people can remember a cast
members name and the not the name of the film. You can search the
director's, or actor's name and find a chronological list of film's
(including T.V. projects) they were involved with.
Take a look at both of these and direct "viewers" there. They are
definitely in my personal top 10 favorite reference resources.

Subject: [Publib] "Viewer's Advisory"
With the dramatic increase in the circulation of DVDs and videos
in libraries, has anyone else noticed the increase in requests from
patrons to recommend good movies? Although I read quite a bit I attend
movies infrequently and I find I am really at a disadvantage when being
asked for "viewer's advisory". It's an interesting new wrinkle on our
job at the reference desk.
