For several years I read to the residents of a nursing home. They loved poetry. Sometimes they would start reciting along with me. How about some short stories? Thurber would be good. If there are many men in the group I would suggest some of the stories by Patrick F. McManus. Very funny and will probably remind many of them of their childhood. As for not getting too sad, one woman always wanted me to read The Little Match Girl. Can you get any more depressing than a small child freezing to death, but she loved it.
