Our outreach librarian conducts storytime with elderly residents of a nursing home, on a monthly basis. Because she only sees them once a month, she is looking for books or stories that can be finished in one session, in approximately 50 minutes.

Through internet searching, I found lists two libraries and a listserv (Logan Libary, Fiction-L, the Jasper public library) had posted of read-alouds for the elderly, and found mention of The Rocking Chair Reader and the Loving Voice books (short stories designed for the elderly). I also gave her some Patricia Polacco picture books, the Giving Tree, Miss Rumpius, the Rag Coat, and others of that ilk.

She's looking for inspirational, happy things to read; no dead dogs, no death, no downers.

I have great confidence in your abilities, darlings; can anyone out there offer further suggestions? She's going Friday, so if you have suggestions, suggest fast :)

  Thanks so much,
  Maggie Bollar
