Could they be the "mushroom planet" books by Eleanor Cameron? I was a girl
in the late 60's and haven't read the books since then but they have since
been reprinted and are reviewed on Amazon. 

 

The picture on the cover of the book I read showed the mushroom-headed
aliens of the titular planet.

Hi, 

 

A co-worker is looking for a series of books that they read as a child in
the early to mid 70's.  

 

They believe that the series was a chapter book about a brother and sister
who meet a neighbor who is a professor who is designing a spaceship.  The
brother and sister eventually fly in the spaceship and visit faraway
planets, meet aliens and have other adventures.

 

My co-worker has been looking for this series for a long time as she enjoyed
them as a child and would like to read them again.
