While attending ALA this summer, at a workshop someone suggested putting drop in collections into local motels that could be used by their customers. So we recently put about 15-20 in ours with a sticker in the front saying the book is provided by our library and they are welcome to take it if they have not finished reading it but would appreciate if they would return it or a similar book the next time they are in our area. Is a good PR move and we just use donated paperbacks that are in decent condition to fill it. Could do the same with your leftovers from your book exchange rack. Just need to check with motel periodically to see if they need more.
We also have drop in collections in one of our HUD apartment complexes meeting room and we put leftover books from book sales at Curves and they always seem to disappear there. Goodwill is always willing to take books too.
