Subject: [Publib] Tuition reimbursement info

We are thinking of starting a tuition reimbursement program for our
employees taking college classes.
If you do something like this in your library could you send me some
information about it.

We are looking for information about
Who, can participate,
Do you pay or reimburse for all levels of college classes or just
graduate classes,
How do you decide who gets tuition money?
Do you require a commitment to stay for a certain period of time.

Below is a copy of the Tuition Reimbursement section
from our Personnel Policy. James B. Casey, Director
Oak Lawn Public Library (south suburban Chicago)

206	TUITION REIMBURSEMENT FOR CONTINUING EDUCATION

The library encourages employees to acquire additional training and/or
academic course work relevant to the work required in their positions or
for advancement to more responsible positions within the library.
Therefore, the library shall budget money each year as a Continuing
Education Fund if budgetary conditions permit. A full-time staff member
with at least one year of full-time employment within the library shall
be allowed to use up to $1,000 per year and a part-time Level 2 staff
member with one year of continuous employment with the Library shall be
allowed to use up to $500 per year of continuing education money for
course work or programs taken beyond regular hours of work which have
been deemed by an employee's supervisor, department head and the
Director to offer training which could enhance the performance of
library personnel.

Employees wishing to receive reimbursement for course work taken must
apply and receive approval before the course begins. Upon completion of
an approved course, the employee shall present both the receipt for
payment of tuition and a formal report indicating successful completion
of the course or program. Where grades are applicable, successful
completion of a course shall be considered to be a grade "C" or above
for undergraduate level courses and "B" or better for graduate or
professional school level courses. Money for continuing education is
available on a first-come, first-serve basis with regard to the date
upon which approval was granted.

The library expects that an employee who has received reimbursement for
continuing education shall remain with the library for a minimum of six
months following completion of any course. In the event that an
employee who has taken and been compensated for continuing education
resigns within six months of the completion of that course work or
program, the employee shall repay the library all tuition reimbursement
amounts for that final course.

Nothing in this section of tuition reimbursement or continuing education
shall be considered as overtime.
