Carolyn, I heard it, too, and thought the same thing!

Subject: [Publib] NPR Morning Edition story

Did anyone else hear the story on Morning Edition this morning about
Vietnam telephone operators? In a country where only one in ten homes
has a phone, the telephone operators do more than provide telephone
numbers. They answer questions about virtually anything. I especially
liked the bit in which the meteorlogical center called the telephone
operator to get information about the weather. Sounds an awful lot like
a reference desk operation to me. I was very surprised that the
reporter didn't make the connection. Here's a link to the story.
