Yep, I heard it about half way through the story.  I, too, expected a
reference to libraries, but apparently the reporter didn't "get it!"
The part that cracked me up was that operators are apparently all women,
because their voices are more sweet and they have more patience than
men.  Ha!

	Did anyone else hear the story on Morning Edition this morning
about Vietnam telephone operators?  In a country where only one in ten
homes has a phone, the telephone operators do more than provide
telephone numbers.  They answer questions about virtually anything.  I
especially liked the bit in which the meteorlogical center called the
telephone operator to get information about the weather.  Sounds an
awful lot like a reference desk operation to me.  I was very surprised
that the reporter didn't make the connection.  Here's a link to the
