Long ago, children left in libraries were collected by the woodcutter from
the dark forest, taken away and made to labor for many days with only dark
bread crusts and stale water to sustain them. If they complained, they were
taken to the home of the witch, who baked them into pies to sell to travelers.
It was a clumsy sort of system, but it worked just fine and employed a lot of
librarians until computers came along and changed everything. Now there is
hardly a librarian around who knows how to cut wood, and you can't find
children's librarians who can bake kids at all.
