We have separated
Suspense from Thrillers,
Mysteries from Crime Fiction,
Chick Lit from Romance,
but I am not brave enough to attempt to split fantasy from science fiction.
After all, Clark's Law, pt.3 applies here (Any sufficiently advanced
technology is indistinguishable from magic).
Plus, we display our new fiction books in 14 genre collections. We keep
about one year's worth of new titles displayed there. If SF and fantasy
were split, neither collection would have enough new titles to attain
critical mass. So our rule is if one year's worth of new books (minus what
will be checked out) does not add up to a good display collection, then
there is no sense in having a separate collection.
