[Publib] Employee Problems

Hi Miranda,
I had a similar problem when I was a first time supervisor at a newspaper
library. My approach was to call a meeting of the staff involved and let
them air their grievences. Most of them felt like they did all of the work
and no one else did anything (yawn, same old story).
What I ended up doing was assigning tasks equally (i.e., this person shelves
etc Mon and works the desk exclusively Tues, this other person shelves Tues
works the desk exclusively Mon, and so forth). That way each person had
equal shelving/desk time and each knew their responsibilities each day of
the week. Best of all I knew who was slacking off and at the same time no
one felt singled out.
Yes, it takes more work initially on your part and I don't know if it works
in a Public library (I am new to PLs) but you might try it.

Publibbers,
I took over being Circulation Supervisor at my library mid February of this
year. This is my first real management position, and includes being in
charge
of our seven library clerks. (They shelve, work circ desk, etc) Lately it
seems that a lot of mistakes are being made, personality conflicts between
staff members are emerging, and general chaos seems to be ensuing. Because I
am still "green" I'm not completely sure how to professionally but sternly
let
my staff know that I expect them to all work together as a team, and
complete
tasks correctly.
I was hoping someone out there in Publib land can offer me some managerial
advice.
Thanks in advance,
Miranda @ Hopkins County
