I tried to do this on our website and a notebook at the desk asking
staff and patrons to contribute. So far only I and one other person
have contributed. People look at the notebook, but do not add to it.

Subject: RE: [Publib] Staff Picks
We have a permanent Staff Picks display at our branch. What I did is
type up people's comments, so they could be printed out as a little
card. This would have the employee's name, the book title and author, a
brief comment, and a brief (one sentence) bio on who the person is in
the library and what they like. The cards are just printed on colored
paper and laminated. I keep a file for each person who participates.
The display itself is in a book bay next to the new book section, and
each person has one book displayed at a time -- face out, with the
corresponding card taped to the shelf in front of it. When I see that
that there is a blank space, I pull the card and find another one from
that person's stack. I usually replenish the display a couple of times
a day. I find this easiest when someone has "picked" a series rather
than a specific title. That way I can leave the same card up for
awhile, and just grab another Amelia Peabody mystery off the shelf or
whatever. I do ask staff members to give me new picks as they think of
them or read books that they really like (or see movies, or listen to
audios), so I'm not always recycling the same stuff. I do prefer having
actual comments, instead of just a note that someone or other liked a
book, as this helps the patrons decide if their taste or mood coincides
with that of the staff member who picked the book.
Hope this helps!

Subject: [Publib] Staff Picks
I've started a collection of Staff Picks at our library which consists
of books that our staff members have read and would like to recommend to
our patrons. We have 16 staff members that participate in this
collection, so displaying the books effectively can be a challenge.
Do any of you have a similar collection at your library? How do you
manage it? How many titles do you display at one time? How often do
you replace the titles with newer selections? Any other suggestions for
making this collection easier to manage and/or more useful for patrons?
Thanks for your help!
