Today's New York Times contains some very interesting material. They've put
together a collection of articles and photographs revealing the rebuilding
of the Pearl Harbor Naval facilities after the attack of December 1941.
Included in the report are communications about the wartime censorship of the
original articles by writer Robert Trumbull--none of the pieces saw light during
the war. A good introduction to any discussion about censorship in wartime,
or any other time, for that matter. And the entire series of articles and
archives would be good to print for any library's collection.
How long ago was all that? Three houses down from me lives a man who was
stationed on the USS Maryland (BB-46). She was inboard of the Oklahoma, which
took at least five bomb hits, rolled over and sank. Maryland, hit twice,
survived more or less intact and fought through the rest of the war. History is
all around us.
