[Publib] Stinky books

I doubt if you can ever remove embedded smells in a book. I suggest:
Consult your weeding policy to determine if the book meets the criteria to be discarded. If it does, discard the book. If not, replace the book.

We do not have the time or space to put books in a container, then check every so often to make sure it does not smell. Also, "smell" is subjective- It is difficult to write policies and procedures based on subjective criteria.

Have you tried kitty litter? Put the book in a box, pour some kitty litter over it and voila! This usually takes the 'funk' out.

We are having problems with several patrons returning books that reek of cigarette, or some other kind of tobacco, smoke. Looking in the archives, I find an entry in which it is recommended that smelly books be put in a zip-lock bag with a fabric softener sheet. Being the modern librarian that I am, I am seeking *diversity* of opinion. Any other recommendations for treating books which have been perfumed with/by the evil weed?

Thanks.
