[Publib] Security in local history room?

We are moving into a new facility in a few weeks and are looking at the best
way to keep the local history room and its contents secure. The room houses
a Michigan History collection that includes, books (some valuable), maps,
photos and files filled with topical information. Most of this information
is in locked cabinets (at least for now). The room also has a genealogy
collection, one computer workstation and some other equipment. The room
opens off a main hallway, but it is not staffed. The staff at the
Information Desk will need to open cabinets and help people find
information. We are concerned about security. Some questions for the
collective brain:
* Does staff need to stay in the room until patrons are finished
browsing, then lock items back up?
* Should we require a sign in to use the resources?
* Should we ask patrons for their driver's license while in the room
(collateral)? The return it to them when they are done?
* Does anyone have a policy statement they'd be willing to share that
might hit on some of these issues?
* Other issues we haven't thought of yet????
Thanks,
Linda Adams
