[Publib] skipping school

I do know some of our kids are home schooled and safely assume some may be out sick, suspended, etc. For the kids skipping school, I am glad they are hanging out in the library rather than on the street...though it's so hot right now, they don't have much of a choice on where to hang out.
At the end of the day, I didn't feel comfortable with having confronted the kids about their truancy, but I wish they were in school getting the education they need.
I'm a freshly minted librarian and experiencing many of these things for the first time, so your advice is much appreciated.

They should be treated with the care and respect you would give to any one using the library. I think it is a good sign that teens would even think of the library as a place to go.

School started this week and we're already seeing older kids playing hookie. I called one of our nearby high schools asking if they could send a truancy officer over and their reply was they don't have an off-campus patrol and to call 911 on the kids.
I'm not too keen on calling 911 for school skippers so I thought I'd ask others on how best to deal with a situation like this. In our case, we let them know we were aware of what they were doing and told them there WAS a truancy officer who regularly patroled the libraries.
