Hi Bobbi,
Each month, we purchase 20 paperback copies of the books for our two adult book clubs. We don't barcode or cover them, but we do stamp the edges with our library's name and number them for tracking purposes. Once they've been used by the library's groups, they are available for any patron or other library's group to borrow.
If you're interested, our list of titles is available here: http://plainfield.lib.il.us/booklovers/kits.asp
I'd guess that the cost of purchasing the books is probably the same or less than the time we used to spend tracking down sufficient copies from the libraries in our consortium.
The only negative is that whatever we read must be available in paperback, so we can't get the new hardcover bestsellers. But since we couldn't get them before, it's not a big loss!
Overall we've been very pleased with this system and we especially love being able to share our books with our patron groups and other libraries. In my experience, book discussion folks are some of the best patrons.
Good luck with your group!

Hi,
Some book club questions for the list
If your library has adult book clubs how do you provide the books?
Does your library buy multiple copies or require participants to
purchase them?
If the library buys copies do you process them and check them out to
patrons or do you loan them to book club members without processing?
I'd be very grateful for answers to these questions and any other
information about your book clubs that you'd like to pass along!
Thank you
Bobbi
