Today’s Los Angeles Times has the story of a remarkable project undertaken
by the Huntington Library to document the lives of hundreds of thousands of
California’s native peoples in the areas under control of the Spanish missions
of the 18th and 19th centuries. The project’s work has culminated in an
online database of information about the inhabitants of the mission communities
that is available to the public on the library’s website. Created from
handwritten records, the database is a priceless repository of information sure to
be of great benefit to scholars of early California.
Primary funding for the project was obtained from the National Endowment for
the Humanities, the California State Library and the Haynes Foundation.
