Today’s Los  Angeles Times has the story of a remarkable project undertaken 
by the  Huntington Library to document the lives of hundreds of thousands of  
California’s native peoples in the areas under control of the Spanish missions  
of the 18th and 19th centuries.  The project’s work has culminated in an  
online database of information about the inhabitants of the mission communities  
that is available to the public on the library’s website.  Created from 
handwritten records, the  database is a priceless repository of information sure to 
be of great benefit to  scholars of early California.   
Primary funding for the project was obtained from the National Endowment  for 
the Humanities, the California State Library and the Haynes  Foundation.
