I got several queries for this policy so am posting to the list.  Most people around here are about four to six blocks from home.  For those coming from the country they have a car since even in our rural area the only horse and buggies are the ones in the parades.  

In a town of 1200 or less it isn't much of a chore.  They don't have to
leave them,  adults can leave their bags at home or in their car and the
kids could take their bags home before coming here.
I can't think of anyone who would want to stick their hand in a kid's
backpack on purpose! >grin<
I explained what the problem was and the kids around here are super and
don't mind a bit.  Before we did that I was always worried someone would
trip on the bags tossed around.  We took care of two problems at the same
time. >> Sedan requires the patron to leave all "bags" at the door<<  Not
purses.
