I think I can understand some of Mark's POV. My married name draws
some to do great German accent imitations & mention of the Nazis; my
Italian maiden name always evoked Mafia conversation OR in some
Italian circles, derogatory comments about the heritage of Sicily,
where my father's family originated from. Comments about how "Japs"
weren't treated all that bad in US concentration camps evokes among
other things, memory of the sadness on my mothers face when she
explained to me how she was sent away to avoid the anti-Japanese
sentiment in the US. Racism came not farther from my own family &
changed my life more than I could ever describe. Still, I have learned
that above all, we need to not take ourselves too seriously,
understand that racism is a generic shortfall of mankind that can & is
directed at all folks everywhere some time or another. As a
"Heinz 57", I could probably be offended by more varieties of
"political incorrectness" than most but I would rather laugh - Through
laughter & levity ala Cho, Mencia, Chappell & others, we see & revel
in how our uniqueness is bound in our sameness of how we celebrate the
mundane as well as the little oddities of life. Laughter is something
we all do the same (except maybe Fran Drescher ;-)
