The Sopranos, unlike, say Gilligan's Island, creates a narrative thread that requires viewers to watch episodes in sequence for best effect. If you break up the complete season and loan disks independently, then the library automation system should allow customers the option to place a single, sequential request. Thus, I place a hold on the complete season; however, my reserve for disk two is enabled only after I have checked out disk one. Talking book libraries do this routinely for book series upon request. Our public library system does not have the sequence feature. Viewer trends suggests it should.
I don't watch the show, but if you split the TV series 24 into, say, six sets of four disks, who wants to watch 12 noon. to 6 p.m. unless he/she has already seen episodes beginning with midnight? I assume it is a non-starter as browser material (I know you will correct me if my assumption is bogus), plus the customer must visit the library up to four times instead of once to get complete season. It seems to me that to split or not to split depends upon the nature of content, not just format.
thanks,
GC
