Here at GCPL we routinely split up the multi-disc sets and create
separate item records each disc so that we circ them individually. The
general rule of thumb is that if the title is a series with more that
two discs, we separate them. See for example our records for The
Sopranos, or Deadwood, or Alias at
http://library.gcpl.lib.oh.us/search/t. Midwest Tape does the
repackaging for us and it has worked out pretty well. If the title is a
feature film with multiple discs, we do our best package all the discs
together, which means our processors build four-disc containers for the
expanded editions of the Lord of the Rings movies for example.

Greetings:

How do you split up a set called "The Sopranos: The Complete Fourth
Season"? One of our eight county libraries saw the value in circulating
individual disks; however, they did not create cataloging for each
discrete item. Rather, they tried to modify the existing record in our
shared database. Customers were placing reserves against bib record only
to find they received the "incomplete" fourth season--the confusion has
hurt customer service.

These kinds of AV questions are vexing regardless of approach.
