[Publib] advice from you all about photos

When I spoke to our City Administrator about developing a promotional video for our summer reading program she advised that I get written parental permission for all photos of children. Apparently a family in the federal witness protection program was exposed by library photos in the newspaper in a nearby town.

There is also the issue of some parents not wanting their children's photos
posted publicly anywhere due to an abusive relative or some other very
serious issues. We have always asked permission from parents about the
newspaper, but the web is a new ballgame, so I'm interested in the replies
here.

I'd strongly urge you to consult with your attorney about such things as
model releases, whether or not a library patron is "fair game" as a
photographic subject as a habitué of a public space. Most people probably
wouldn't object but one person considering your posting of his/her child's
picture as a source of embarrassment could result in some really unpleasant
consequences.

Hi there,

I've set up a Flickr site for my library--I was wondering, do any of you
have policies about posting photos online of your library patrons,
particularly children? Some other libraries already have photos of kids up
(reading, looking at animals, etc., which is the sort of thing I'd like to
post, too).

We've just finished our summer reading program, have some great photos
(group shots, kids with turtles, things like that), and I'd like to share
them via our library's Flickr site...but I don't want to endanger anyone
and/or set up the library for a liability issue.

Do you all have any input, advice, etc.?

Thanks a bunch,

-Katie
