[Publib] Work Hours

Greetings,

For what it's worth...

Initially, I was an education major during my undergraduate studies. Seven weeks into my twelve weeks of student teaching, I 'crunched the numbers' so to speak, to learn that with the amount of time I was spending on grading papers, lesson plans and the like, I would be making (around) minimum wage. Mind you, this would be for ALL hours worked, including work I took home with me. Further, this would be in Chicago, where the teachers do make a (somewhat) decent amount of $.

(As a side note, shortly after I discovered this, I withdrew from my program and changed my major into Pre-Law. Best decision I made, in regards to my education, that is. Never mind that I was 5 weeks away from graduating, had already taken my licensure exams, and had to stay in school for another year, but I digress.)

I love what I do - I can basically work when I want (I am one of the few who enjoys working a varied schedule, including weekends/nights), and I don't take any work home with me - at all. Ever. When I walk out of work, I truly 'walk out of work'.

When I explain it to my friends like this, they become envious of me...plus I'm surrounded by all these beautiful books. And we have coffee/tea here, too! (I'm not being sarcastic, for once, either.)

For all that seems to be "wrong" with the profession, I think I'm pretty lucky to work where I do.

Cheers,
Stephanie Carlile
