Subject: Library Slogans - Compilation
It was requested that I post a compilation of the replies I received
to the list. Please see the list below. The original question is
also listed.
ORIGINAL QUERY:
In the process of our strategic planning, one of our trustees has
suggested that the library come up with a slogan to help promote the
library. The library already has a mission statement, so the slogan
would be something different.
I was wondering how many other libraries have a slogan that is used in
promoting or advertising the library, and what that slogan is?
Thanks,
Courtney Stephens

The last time we did a strategic plan, our consultants suggested the
same thing. The trustees came up with "Naperville's Neighborhood of
Knowledge". Not as meaningful, perhaps, as Burger King's "Have it your
way" or Ford's old "Quality is Job 1", but we have been asked to use
it in things like email signatures and the like. Maybe "Info to go"
would work for you!

Hi Courtney:
We developed a "vision statement" apart from a "mission statement" a
few years back, and even then I told the Board it would really be a
phrase that is more like a slogan.
Ours is "delivering the world of ideas to you"
Our mission statement is a whole paragraph.
Hope this helps

Hi Courtney.
Having a slogan or tagline for your library is an excellent
communications idea. What's the difference between a tagline and
slogan? Well, for some it's rather obscure, but basically a tagline is
expresses the essence of an entity's brand name and the business it's
in. Taglines don't change very often. A slogan is usually associated
with promotion campaigns and express the central message of the
campaign. As you might guess, a slogan can change or disappear
entirely when the campaign ends. Here's an article which I think
explains it best. http://www.adslogans.co.uk/ww/prvwis01.html
It's entirely possible for your library to have both a tagline and a
slogan..... the tagline for your information business-- the library,
and, if you are running a campaign with the ALA "@ your library"
campaign, then you would also have a slogan. The campaign is a
separate marketing promotion, while the tagline is a brand
communications vehicle.
Many information services across the spectrum of libraries - public,
academic, corporate, legal, medical, government etc-- use taglines and
slogans in their marketing strategies. For example, here's a bookmark
I have to a list of slogans from the North Dakota state library.
http://ndsl.lib.state.nd.us/Slogan.html (I suspect that the adopted
"slogan" is really the tagline for the library.)
Here are taglines we recently developed for clients. The first is for
a reinvented corporate information service called InteliQuest. It's
tagline : "The information works." And for the FDA Information
Services Division the tagline is "Realizing the Advantage of
Information", while the tagline for a group of indexers is
"Vocabularies with Vision."
Because our marketing services include crafting slogans and taglines
for clients, I have some resources that may be of interest to you. On
my web site branding page, there is a reading list of branding
resources which includes brand slogans.

Our free marketing newsletter, Marketing Treasures
(http://www.chrisolson.com/marketingtreasures/) will be running a
feature article on taglines and slogans this summer. If you haven't
already subscribed, you might want to get on our distribution list.
The archive of 11 years of Marketing Treasures is available too.
If you happen to be in Toronto for the Special Libraries Association
conference in June, I'll be leading a half-day workshop about
Branding, which includes a section on slogans and taglines.
http://www.chrisolson.com/coa/coawhatsnew.html . I'm also leading
another workshop on developing promotion campaigns the following day.
Hope this helps.
