[ILL-L] Cuyahoga County Public Library

While I think it's nice that so many libraries are offering to help
Cuyahoga County Public Library, but I think maybe the larger point was
missed.  I've looked at their web page and it says:

 

You will no longer be able to request and borrow any items - including
print copies of magazine/journal articles - through WorldCat. Library
staff will continue to process outstanding requests until the
Interlibrary Loan Department closes on September 18, 2009.
After that date, unprocessed requests will be returned and customers
contacted. (emphasis added)  Also, see

I read this to mean that after the 18th, there will be no more ILL
Department through which patrons may seek loans.  There will be no staff
to process loans.  It doesn't seem to be a question of postage or
reciprocity.  The entire department is being eliminated.  If you Google
Ohio library budget and follow the "news" link, you'll see that they had
large cuts to their budgets across the state, and libraries across Ohio
have had to cut hours, introduce furloughs, slash programs, and
apparently close entire departments.

 

It's a huge loss to ILL and to the users of the Cuyahoga County Public
Library, but perhaps continuing messages of "we'll still loan to you"
only rubs salt into the wounds.  Just a thought.
