Ohio libraries have been just devastated by the state budget cuts. My husband is a librarian at the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library and they are facing layoffs and reductions in their hours at all locations. Even though they are strongly supported by the local tax base, the state cuts and lower property taxes are forcing them to make painful cuts across the board. Our libraries are more important to folks now during this recession, it's true. People go in to use the internet to look for jobs.
They borrow books, movies, and music rather than purchase. Take advantage of the children's programs for their entertainment.
The cuts will happen in October here in Toledo. It'll be sad for a lot of people and next year could be even worse.

Well, I am really surprised that no one has commented on this post. I expected to come in to work this morning with a zillion email responses.
Gail, I am distressed by this news. Are you losing staff members or will they be reassigned? Are you still going to borrow for your patrons? Are other library services being reduced/eliminated? Is this a last ditch effort to balance a budget, or are the library services considered to be expendable and the among first to go in the County budget reductions?
Hasn’t your county heard that library services are even MORE important in times of recession?
My heart goes out to you, your staff, and your citizens.
Carol
