Having been engaged in ILL activity for 30 years, I can tell you that custom holding groups and paths are an excellent idea. And I have invested time in fine-tuning my groups and using this functionality to save hours in expediting requests.
However, over the years I have discovered that there were two major obstacles to their implementation. One was the categories or format that OCLC listed, for example:
* Sound Recording - CD, instead of CD-Spoken word and CD-Music
* Visual Material -DVD, instead of DVD-Fiction and DVD-Non-fiction
* No new or updated categories-- Preloaded Digital Media (Playaways)
* No Genealogy
* No way to search for free lenders of photocopies unless you are an LVIS participant
The other major obstacle was the interface which allowed for libraries to indicate in the Non-Circulating statement for the Quick View page that they don't circulate AV and yet allowed them to create a policy under the policy tab that said they did. This made searching for valid lenders of AV to be a near impossible task.
As many of you know libraries often have one policy for Music CD and yet another for Books on CD. The same is true of DVDs --non-fiction often circulates and the DVD fiction collection at the library may not. The ILL policy regarding Genealogy has always been hard to determine. In creating the ILLINET Resource Sharing Policy Directory http://www.librarylearning.info/rsdirectory/ we have attempted to address these issues. In addition to photocopy and ILL policies the Directory is a resource for Reciprocal Borrowing policies throughout the State of Illinois. The Directory came online 3 weeks ago, and we are still in the process of having libraries across the State add their data. If you want to view category definitions on the search page choose either Photocopies, Loans, or Reciprocal Borrowing. And yes, the results list throws OCLC symbols in a window from which you can copy and paste. The interface for entering your ILL policy lists 34 categories and one indicates either "yes" you loan it, "no" you don't loan it, or "Not owned" meaning you don't collect that category of material. Entering one's policies is this manner makes the creation of custom holding groups and paths a breeze. Within the interface is the capability to query for format policies by regional library systems within ILLINET, allowing us to build custom holding groups and paths by format that supports geographical borrowing within Illinois (borrowing from your neighboring system and not far across the State).
If you are involved in Resource Sharing at an ILLINET library, please log into L2 and enter your library RS policies. There is also the capability to upload a copy of your written ILL lending and borrowing policy, allowing libraries to meet the ILLINET ILL Code requirement for them to post their ILL policy online.
If anyone should have any questions, please feel free to contact me off the list.
