Unfortunately, in this litigious age, when burglars sue because they
injure themselves while burgling a place, sometimes it's necessary to
cover yourself. I remember once when I taught a Mythology course with
300 students, my predecessor showed me her syllabus, which was 5 pages
long--largely regulations that seemed to me obvious and unnecessary.
She was right, I was wrong. By my third year teaching the course, the
syllabus had grown to six pages. (Even that didn't cover the two
students, in separate cases, who claimed it wasn't their fault they
missed tests, because they were in jail at the time. "You've got one
phone call. Better make it to your Mythology instructor."

Maybe, when we lend large heavy books on ILL, we should also include a
note that "This book is not to be used as a blunt instrument for
clubbing people."

Arthur Robinson (GLG, who has read too much Agatha Christie)

The question becomes do we actively try to play "copyright police" or
not - are we going to start putting disclaimers on every single item in
our libraries - books or a/v or anything else? And is a reminder that
it is illegal to copy the cd going to actually stop anyone who is
willing to engage in such behavior in the first place? Granted it would
give the library further legs to stand on if something did happen
