[ILL-L] missing title

Arthur,

I work with chemists and that is the way the literature was cited then. Sometimes it is hard to track down the title. We are fortunate enough to have Chemical Abstracts here going way back and that helps.

Regards,

Ethel

I take it this is a computer issue, not a citation issue? I occasionally have faculty come in with citations from scholarly journals in fields like Chemistry that omit the article title. I had one recently that read something like

Lingane, J. (1945). Ind. eng. ch. 17:640.

That's how it was cited in the journal--no article title, which would probably have enabled me to find it easily in JSTOR or even by Googling. I eventually tracked down the title, but it took a while. Does anyone know why some citation formats deliberately omit the article title? Do they assume that scholars have these on their shelves and only need the year and page number (and know what Ind. eng. ch. stands for)?

Ignore me. I'm just venting again. (In fact I once worked in a field that assumed that everyone knew what LCM, YCS, HSCP, and ANRW stood for. Our citations must have made life miserable for librarians, especially in those pre-Internet days.)

I haven't had that problem. Bummer. That creates a lot of extra work.

I'm curious to see if anybody else has had this problem. Over the past week, I've received several requests form other libraries that appear to have been taken from an FirstSearch record but the title is missing. The author and publisher and all the other information are there, just the title is missing. Am I the only one experiencing this?
